Apple just announced the iPhone release date; the phone will be out on the 29th of June. They announced it in a rather unusual way; in small letters at the end of a new iPhone advert shown during 60 minutes on CBS, sunday evening. The new advert (entitled “Calamari”) shows an iPhone playing the film Pirates of the Caribbean, then the announcer says “Hm. Did someone say Calamri?”, with the user then quickly rotating the iPhone, switching to the Maps application of the iPhone and typing in “Seafood”. The application then displays a number of seafood restaurants, with the user then picking one (Pacific Catch, which will no doubt be overwhelmed with Apple fans this evening) and clicking on it. The iPhone then shows the details of the restaurant, and the user taps on the phone number to dial the restaurant. At the end of the ad, it announces the launch date; the 29th of June. You can watch the full advert on Apple’s site here .
It’s a clever advert; it shows how you can quickly move between applications on the iPhone with just a touch of the screen, and how applications like the maps and phone are linked. But we’ll have to see how well it reflects the real experience of using the iPhone; will it be as quick as that, especailly with the iPhone only having an EDGE radio on board?
