26th July 2007 - Microsoft Exchange users, rejoyce: the Helio Ocean is getting support for Microsoft's popular email server system. Helios just announced Mail for Microsoft Exchange service that allows users of their Ocean handset (which we reviewed here) to send and receive messages through Exchange servers, which are commonly used in large companies.Although Helio is not pitching the Ocean as a phone for corporate users, the new service does make it an interesting alternative to a BlackBerry; the Mail for Microsoft Exchange service brings the same push email features to the Ocean that the BlackBerry has, where new emails are delivered to the device as soon as they are received on the server. And the dual-slider design includes a large QWERTY keyboard that we found was very quick and comfortable to use.
However, the new service is not free; it costs $9.99 a month, and many devices (particularly those that run Microsoft's own Windows Mobile OS) come with this feature built in and free to use. Phones that run the Symbian OS don't come with this feature built in, but the software to access Exchange servers is available as a free download. The new service also includes a file viewer that Helio claims can be used to view (but not edit) Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF files. The service will also synch calendar and contact items betwee the Exchange server and the Ocean's own software.
The new service is available now, and costs $9.99 a month. Helio are offering a 60-day trial.
