Who's It For
Business User
The HTC Mogul is an excellent choice for business users. The improved integration with Exchange server that comes with Windows Mobile 6, HTML email, powerful PIM applications and push email via Exchange Activesync are all important for business users. The only fly in the ointment is the camera. If you're place of business bans camera phones the Mogul isn't going to be a choice. If this isn't a barrier, the Mogul will do very well for you.
Budget Callers
Despite its fairly reasonable price for the functionality you get the Mogul just isn't in the cards for most people looking for a budget phone, even a budget smart phone. If you do want a smart phone at a more reasonable price you can get the Mogul's predecessor the PPC-6700 for $99 with contract.
Chatty Teenager
The Mogul probably isn't a good choice for the chatty teenager because most teenagers aren't going to need all of the powerful business features the Mogul offers. It is a good multimedia device, and the QWERTY keyboard is probably going to tempt heavy texters, but you're probably better off with a Motorola Q at a much lower price or even a non smartphone.
Media Maven
The Mogul may be a good choice for a media maven. Windows Media Player Mobile provides solid multimedia functionality and the large 2.8" screen is great for watching videos. Unfortunately what might at first have been an attraction, the 2 megapixel camera, doesn't live up to its potential. In fact it takes its potential and jumps up and down on it, producing terrible photos. If that doesn't bother you too much you could do a lot worse than the Mogul as a multimedia phone.
Conclusion
The HTC Mogul has big shoes to fill as the successor to the PPC-6700, an extremely successful Windows Mobile handsets. We found the upgrades offered by the Mogul, Windows Mobile 6, 2 megapixel camera, scroll wheel, to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The presence of HTML email and better integration with Exchange Server will certainly be important features for business users, but many may find they're better off saving $200 and picking up a PPC-6700 for $99 with a two-year contract. We wish that the Mogul had included GPS functionality as many other modern HTC handsets are doing. We also wish that support for Sprint's music store and EVDO Rev A had been included from the beginning rather than coming via firmware upgrades.
Still, the Mogul is a solid handset. It performed admirably, if not spectacularly, on our battery tests. The 2 megapixel camera leaves a bit to be desired, especially in the area of color fidelity and video recording. Support for power PIM and email users is built into the handset, and any software deficiencies you run into can probably be addressed by third party software. We found we liked the Mogul. For those looking for a powerful Windows Mobile handset it's probably the best choice available on Sprint today.
