Call Time (6.60)
To test battery performance while calling we make a call to the handset using Skype. We play an audio book over the connection to simulate conversation and time how long it takes for the phone's battery to run out. The Mogul lasted 5 hours and 30 minutes in our call time test. This is a reasonable score, better than the Treo 750's 3 hours 58 minutes and the about the same as the Nokia N95's 5 hour and 43 minute time. It fell short of the excellent times put up by the BlackBerry 8800, 10 hours 24 minutes, and the T-Mobile Wing, 14 hours 15 minutes. The Mogul's talk time should be sufficient for most, but power phone users may find it a little limiting.
| Cell Phone | Talk Time | Score |
| HTC Mogul | 5 hours 30 minutes | 6.6 |
| T-Mobile Wing | 14 hours 15 minutes | 17.1 |
| BlackBerry 8800 | 10 hours 24 minutes | 10.6 |
| Helio Ocean | 4 hours 7 minutes | 4.94 |
| Nokia N95 | 5 hours 43 minutes | 6.86 |
| Apple iPhone | 7 hours 4 minutes | 8.48 |
Music Playback (8.08)
To test how well the battery handles music playback we set an album to play back repeatedly at maximum volume and time how long it takes for the phone battery to run out. The HTC Mogul put up a good time of 11 hours and 13 minutes. This is significantly better than the Nokia N95's 5 hours and 40 minutes and the Helio Ocean's 8 hours 9 minutes. It's roughly the same as the BlackBerry 8800's time of 9 hours 47 minutes and the T-Mobile Wing's time of 10 hours 26 minutes. It did fall well short of the Treo 750's excellent 15 hour 23 minute time. We were very pleased with the Mogul's time in this test. You will be able to listen to music on a long cross country flight with time to spare.
| Cell Phone | Music Playback Time | Score |
| HTC Mogul | 11 hours 13 minutes | 8.08 |
| T-Mobile Wing | 10 hours 26 minutes | 7.51 |
| BlackBerry 8800 | 9 hours 47 minutes | 7.04 |
| Helio Ocean | 8 hours 9 minutes | 5.87 |
| Nokia N95 | 5 hours 48 minutes | 4.08 |
| Apple iPhone | 10 hours 46 minutes | 7.78 |
Web Browsing (5.36)
To test battery performance while browsing the web we point the phone's browser at a test page that is set to refresh every 10 seconds. We then ensure that the phone's backlight stays on and see how long the battery lasts. The Mogul lasted 4 hours and 28 minutes in our browsing test. This time is significantly better than the Treo 750's time of 3 hours 2 minutes, but falls well short of the BlackBerry 8800's 9 hour and 3 minute time. It's also worse than the T-Mobile Wing's 9 hour 52 minute time, although it should be noted that both the 8800 and Wing operate on the slower and less power intensive Edge network, as opposed to the EVDO network used by the Mogul. The BlackBerry 8700 also runs on Sprint's EVDO network and put up a time similar to the Mogul's at 4 hours and 35 minutes. Given the excellent speeds you get on EVDO and how battery intensive it is the Mogul's performance in this test is reasonable.
| Cell Phone | Browsing Time | Score |
| HTC Mogul | 4 hours 28 minutes | 5.36 |
| T-Mobile Wing | 9 hours 52 minutes | 11.84 |
| BlackBerry 8800 | 9 hours 3 minutes | 10.86 |
| Helio Ocean | 4 hours 19 minutes | 7.7 |
| Nokia N95 | 6 hours 8 minutes | 6.8 |
| Apple iPhone | 5 hours 13 minutes | 6.26 |
Idle Time unscored
In order to ensure that we deliver reviews in a timely manner we don't test idle time, which can run into weeks. Neither HTC nor Sprint publish the Mogul's standby time.
