As a Windows Mobile device it is a fairly straightforward process to synchronize your device with your desktop using either Activesync with Windows XP or Windows Mobile Device Manager with Windows Vista. You will need to download the software or install it from an included software CD.
The HTC Advantage can synchronize with Outlook on your Windows machine. A copy of Outlook has generally been included as a standard piece of software with all Windows Mobile devices, but we were unable to confirm that the Advantage would be shipping with it. We expect that it will however. As with any Windows Mobile device you can customize your alerts to go off any length of time before an appointment or task. You do not have control over what alert will sound for each appointment, however you can change this globally in the settings. We are unsure as to whether the upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 will change this.
You can add a new contact to the HTC Advantage via the left soft key when in the contacts program. The HTC Advantage allows you to filter your contacts by category and view them by name or category. You can use the search box at the top of the contacts to search for a name or company (depending on your view) with the list being automatically updated as you type. We did not see this on the Advantage we reviewed but given the large screen this may be a good place to create a split view. As a Windows Mobile device the Advantage contains a plethora of fields where you can enter information about your contacts. You can add a new appointment to the HTC Advantage via the left soft key menu in the Calendar application. The HTC Advantage provides the standard calendar views for Windows Mobile: agenda, day, week, month and year view. When the device is upgraded to Windows Mobile 6 before launch these views will have added functionality compared to the Windows Mobile 5 version we reviewed. Again, this may be a good place for a split view option, we will see if HTC chooses to add this functionality. As a Windows Mobile device the HTC Advantage provides you with a good selection of fields when entering in a new appointment, including the ability to send an invitation to your contacts.
The tasks application on the HTC Advantage is the standard on found on Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Devices. We are unsure if there will be any updates to the application when the Advantage is upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. You can create a new task within the application by using the left soft key menu.
The tasks program on the Advantage allows you to sort your tasks by status, priority, subject, start and due date. You can also filter by active tasks or by category. When creating a new task on the HTC Advantage you are provided with 9 different fields, plus the ability to add a note.
The HTC Advantage we looked at had the standard Windows Mobile 5 notes application. You can create a new note by hitting the left soft key when in the application. The notes interface on the HTC advantage is simple a list of notes you have created. They can be sorted by name, date, size and type, but they not include any advanced formatting features. You can zoom in and add handwriting or drawings to notes.
The voice memo application is integrated into the standard Windows Mobile 5 notes application. It allows you to create standalone voice notes or embed voice notes into text notes. We also noted an additional stand alone voice notes application installed on the device.
