Who’s It For

Business user - We would not recommend the HTC Advantage X7501 for most business users because as we found the keyboard unimpressive and the large size is impractical. Still, it does offer a range of connectivity options and business applications, so it may be attractive to business users who want the latest device.

Budget callers - The HTC Advantage X7501 is not a good choice for budget callers, we won't be surprised to see it released at a price point over $1000. Even if it doesn't hit $1000, it will certainly be out of reach of most budget callers.

Chatty teenager - The HTC Advantage X7501 is not a good choice for chatty teenagers due to its large size and feature set that is much more than what most teenagers need.

Media maven - The Nokia E90 may be a good choice for a media maven. The large screen is attractive for watching video, the 3 megapixel camera may allow you to take decent pictures (we’ll know more about this when we run it through our full suite of image tests) and 8GB of storage allow you to store a large amount of media. The VGA out is also attractive for sharing your media with others on any TV. All of these things may be offset by the large size and what we expect to be a high price point.
Conclusion
The HTC Advantage X7501 certainly packs an impressive array of features into an innovative form factor. Whether it is practical is another matter. We liked the large display, but found the pixel density to be a little low for our taste. We also found the magnetic dual use keyboard to be innovative, but not easy to use. We were happy with the range of connectivity options available on the Advantage, and look forward to seeing the device running Windows Mobile 6 with its upgrades to Windows Mobile 5, although they are more evolutionary than revolutionary.
Because we looked at the device at the CTIA show in Orlando, we were not able to give the Advantage the thorough treatment we would in our labs, but our impression of the devices is that it may be best described as a demonstration device. It is HTC's first device with a hard drive, first device with TV out and first device with a 3 megapixel auto focus lens. We don't see a huge market for the Advantage apart from those seeking the most feature packed Windows Mobile device, but we look forward to seeing the Advantage's features begin to roll out in future, smaller and more affordable HTC devices.
