8th April 2007 - Don’t get the Internet on your cell phone? You can still search Google with their experimental voice local search service. The new way to search Google’s database of local businesses is available by calling 1 800 GOOG 411 (1 800 466 4411), and it allows you to search for local businesses by name or category: you search for Pizza restaurants by saying “pizza”. The service can then connect you to the business free of charge, or send you the details of the service in a text message.
We tried the new service, and, despite the fact that it is an experimental service, it seemed to work as advertised: the service recognized our city and quickly provided the details of eight local pizza restaurants, then connected us to one at our request. The text message aspect of the service also worked well; when we asked it to text the details to us, the message with the name, address and phone number of our selected pizza joint arrived with us in just a few seconds.
