The software comes on a micro SD card and will run on comptible cell phones that include a GPS receiver (Garmin didn't specify which OSes it will run under). The Mobile XT software also includes access to Garmin's online services, providing information such as live traffic, weather and local fuel prices. The software also supports Garmin's new PeerPoints feature, which allows users to share their position with other users, and navigate to them at the touch of a button.
This puts it in competition with the GPS services offered by most of the carriers themselves. Many of them resell Navteq or Garmin's own services, which only provide turn-by-turn directions for a monthly fee. Sprint, for instance, offers Both Telelnav and Garmin Mobile to their users for a $9.99 a month subscription, so Garmin Mobile XT would be cheaper after 10 months of use. This means that Mobile XT might be a better pick for the frequent traveler who uses GPS a lot.
Garmin Mobile XT is available now for $99.
