Federal Communications Commission is contemplating a nationwide emergency alert system using text messages on cell phones and other mobile devices in the United States. AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile and Verizon are keen to participate in this service, which should go live by 2010.

"We look forward to offering mobile emergency alerts to our customers," said Jim Bugel, assistant vice president of federal affairs for AT&T.
