EU Could Cap Roaming Charges

March 15, 2007 – Europeans travelling around the continent could see the end of high roaming phone charges with new proposed regulations announced for the summer in the European Union, according to a Reuters report today. EU ministers proposed a cap for mobile roaming charges and agreed that a price limit should apply to all mobile customers in the European Union.Traveling Europeans who frequent neighboring nations have traditionally been plagued by high costs for roaming calls within in 27 countries in the EU. On average, a traveler would be charge 4 to 6 euros for a four-minute call to a mobile phone in another EU country, four times higher than mobile calls in the country of their carrier plan, according to Reuters.
With current talks between the Commission, European Parliament, and member nations, the EU Council has proposed a maximum cap on wholesale roaming fees at 30 - 50 euros for incoming calls and 15 – 33 euro for receiving calls. If a settlement is reached, consumers could see the reduced costs of roaming fees by the end of the year, according to Reuters.
