China is going 3G. The Chinese government has just awarded the first license to build a 3G network in the country, where cell phone use is growing at a remarkable rate (there were 334 million cell phone users in china in 2004, according to infoplease). The first license was awarded to China Mobile, the state-sponsored cellular network, who willb e spending $5.2 billion to build and upgrade their existing network. More licenses expected to be awarded to other companies soon. But you won’t be able to take your US 3G phone and roam over there; the network will be built using the TD-SCDMA standard, which isn’t compatible with the CDMA or GSM standard used in the USA.
