March 15, 2007 – Arizona State Senate yesterday rejected a cell phone rights bill that would have allowed users to withdraw from their carrier plans due to unsatisfactory service. In a 16-11 vote, the Senate voted to deny Bill SB1241 because of undetermined consequences, according to the Associated Press.
Standard mobile carriers offer customers one or two-year customer contracts. If customers want to break their membership earlier than agreed, they face financial penalties despite service performance. The cell phone user bill of rights, as it has been deemed, would have allowed consumers to break their contracts early without the additional fees.
Senator Pam Gorman (R-Anthem, AZ) who sponsored the bill said, “I think I know where the wireless lobbyists have been this last month,” reported the AP.
