Apple sold 1.7 million iPhones last quarter

Apple today released their quarterly results and indicated that they sold 1,703,000 iPhones (review) in the quarter. Total revenue for the quarter was $7.51 billion with profits of $1.05 billion. Apple mentioned excitement around the iPhone SDK in its conference call, which is expected to be available in June of this year. Apple has indicated that they expect to sell a total of 10 million iPhones in 2008.

The iPhone has recently seen price drops in several markets including the UK and Germany. There have also been rumors of the iPhone entering new markets such as Italy and Australia. Rumors have also indicated that the iPhone will enter these new markets as an unlocked handset, contravening Apple's previous strategy of tying the phone to a single carrier in a market and receiving a portion of subscriber revenue. Apple will likely need to begin selling the iPhone in many more markets in order to reach their goal for 2008 as well as introduce a 3G version of the device.
