Apple Recalls 3G iPhone Power Adapters

Apple has issued an immediate recall on the power adapter that was supplied with the iPhone 3G after it emerged that the metal prongs may break off in the socket, exposing the user to a possible electrical shock. They are recommending that all users stop using the adapter, and will be making a replacement available soon.

The news was released by Apple late on Friday, after the company claimed that they had received several reports of the prongs breaking off, but that there had been no injuries. If the prongs break off in the socket, there is a risk of an electrical shock. Apple is recommending that all iPhone 3G users in the US, Mexico, Canada, Japan and other countries do not use the adapter, and use the USB cable to recharge their phones instead.

Apple will be offering replacement adapters in the US starting on October 10th, either at Apple stores or by Web order. The replacement will be free both online and at Apple stores, although there is an expected 3-week shipping time for the online exchange. When the user enters their iPhone serial number on the special request form, they will be sent the new adapter and a box to return the old one. Details of the exchagne plan for other countries have not yet been released.

The power adapters that are affected are the ultracompact USB power adapters that were supplied with the iPhone 3G; the larger adapter that was supplied with the original iPhone is not affected by the recall.
