10th April 2007 – The mobile network Amp’d has announced that they have close to 200,000 subscribers, 84,000 of which signed up in the first quarter of 2007. The network (which recently added the Motorola Q to their roster of phones) also claims that their users are doing much more than making phone calls; figures released by the company claim that their users have downloaded more than four million videos and songs in the first quarter (although they didn’t specify how many of these were free or paid for).

The MVNO network (Mobile Virtual Network Operator, which means they don’t run their own network; they use Verizon) also claims that their ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) figure is much higher than the industry average: the claim an ARPU of around $30, against the industry average of $6.74 a month. This figure indicates how much revenue the company gets from each user, including things such as fees for incoming calls, additional subscription services and online purchases.  The other leading MVNO Helio has not announced subscriber or ARPU figures.
