30th Aug 2007 - AT&T's latest cell phone is the Sony Ericsson W580i Walkman, a media focussed device that includes a 2-megapixel camera. The new handset is available now, and costs $129.99 with a 2-year contract or $269.99 without.
The W580i was announced by Sony Ericsson at the CTIA show earlier this year, but this is the first time it has been picked up by a US carrier. The handset is a media-focussed slider phone that carries the venerable Sony Walkman brand. Music is stored on a Memory Stick Micro card, which are avaialble in capacities of up to 2GB. There's also an FM radio and support for Bluetooth Headphones.
The W580i is also a quad-band GSM phone, so it would work in all countries that use the GSM phone standard; a big plus for frequent travellers. The data spped is limited to an EDGE connection though, which will be much slower than the HSDPA connections that other AT&T phones include. However, EDGE is adequate for email and occasional web browsing, and the W580i supports AOL, Yahoo and MSN email services out of the box.
Those who are entranced by blinky lights will also like the W580i; a number of multi-colored LED lights under the buttons and the central control dial can be synchronized with the music. There is also an unusual method of controlling the music; you cna skip to the next track by shaking the phone (Sony calls this, suprisingly enough, Shake control). The W580i also includes the same motion sensire that allows for Shake control as a pedometer that can measure the distance you've walked or run, making it a fitness aid; plus Sony's TrackID software, which can identify a song from a short clip recorded by the phone. The W580i is available now and costs $129.99 with a 2-year contract, or $269.99 without.
