15th Oct 07 – Nokia has just started shipping the 8GB version of the N95. They claim that the 8GB of memory will hold up to 20 hours of video or 6000 songs. Coincidentally, that's the same amount of memory that the iPhone has. The new N95 8GB will cost 560 Euros (approx $797) and will be available in Nokia stores soon. Nokia did not release any specific information on US pricing or availability.

This should not be confused with the N95 with US 3G support that we covered before: the two models are different. The newly released N95 8GB does not support the US 3G data frequencies; in the USA, it would only offer the slower EDGE data connection. The N95 8GB is also available in black, while the N95 with US 3G support is in silver.

Buyers in some European and Middle East countries will get a bonus: a pre-installed version of Spider-Man 3. The movie will come already installed in the memory of N95 8GB phones in some countries, but Nokia did not reveal a specific list.

Apart from the expanded memory, the N95 8GB is pretty much identical to the original N95 that we reviewed here; the screen is the same size, and the other features are the same. The only major update is a firmware update that Nokis claims improvces performance. One important feature this does add: support for A-GPS (Assisted GPS) which speeds up the initial GPS location fix by using a powerful server to process the GPS signal quicker.

This new N95 is obviously designed as an iPhone competitor; it has the same amount of memory and a similar set of features. However, the iPhone has the edge in screen size (3.5 inches against the 2.2 inches of the N95) and other features; the integration with iTunes makes it a much simpler phone to synch and manage media on.

Nokia will be selling the N95 8GB through Nokia stores; it has not been picked up by any US carriers. This means that the phone will be more expensive than most (US carriers subsidize the cost of the phone to reduce the initial cost), but it will work with any GSM network (such as AT&T or T-Mobile).
