Symbian today announced that 15.9 million handsets shipped in the first quarter of 2007 that run versions of its Symbian operating system. Symbian is the underlying operating system that is used with Nokia's Series 60 and Sony Ericsson's UIQ handsets. The 15.9 million handsets shipped last quarter represent 35.9% growth over the same quarter one year ago. Symbian gathered royalties worth $37.9 million. Symbian is owned by Nokia and Sony Ericsson, which are also its largest customers.

Symbian devices currently control over 50% of the global smart phone market, although in the United States their share is significantly lower due to the fact that few handsets are offered by U.S. carriers. The total number of Symbian handsets in the market increased to 114 million with the latest quarters figures. 14 new Symbian smart phones shipped in the last quarter, including the Nokia N95, a high end handset that includes integrated GPS, Wi-Fi, 5 megapixel camera and supports high speed HSDPA networks.

Yesterday Motorola featured the Symbian UIQ based MOTORIZR Z8 at an unveiling event for the Razr 2. Like many manufacturers Motorola is producing handsets for various platforms, including Symbian, Windows Mobile and Linux.
